Ok så teknisk fråga. Jag ska alltså läsa informatik med inriktning systemvetenskap i höst. Har en MacBook men ska köpa ny laptop. Budget obefintlig. Vad behöver man ha? i5? i7? Eller Ryzen? Och räcker 8GB ram? Tittar på Lenovo pga rimlig studentrabatt men öppen för förslag. Obs kan INGENTING om kodning.

We've had loads of new folks join Fosstodon, over the last few months. There are plenty of articles/blogs on FOSS friendly alternatives out there, and suggestions for such but, it'd be nice to hear from the community. What apps/alternatives are you using and why? What would you suggest for someone who's new to the FOSS scene? What have you discovered, based on your experiences?
Let's give our newer/unfamiliar members some community input and a few "pro tips" 😉

@kameleonidas Moving-account notices only work if the server you're moving from still works. I'd think that followers' own servers should cache the followee's public key when follows are set up so followers can search for and validate the followee's new account if the old account is no longer accessible.
This could even be semi-automatic: “Your followee @firstname.lastname@example.org is no longer accessible but an account @email@example.com is signed by the same key. Do you want to follow that account instead?”
Has anyone bumped in to any concrete numbers over the environment impact of our usage of suboptimal software, eg js+web tech instead of native desktop apps, the power usage of crypto currencies, the cost of constantly brute forcing problems instead of elegant solutions?
Any data is much appreciated - it trying to write something intelligent about this.
